Making Grizz play above the rim.
I was thrilled when Jenae approached me with the challenge of filming the years athletics sponsorship video for Realteam, sponsoring Oakland University Athletics. This spot would eventually go on to see regional distribution and played during games. I found out I’d be collaborating with Oakland University’s mascot, Grizz. This added an extra layer of excitement to the project. They said I could get him to “do whatever I wanted”, lol. From conceptualizing the idea of Grizz dunking to crafting the script, overseeing production, and handling the filming, I was excited to be bringing the Athletics Sponsorship Video to life.
What made this project particularly fulfilling was the chance to execute a unique and captivating concept—one that sustained the energy from the game into the commercial break. Oakland contributed the basketball footage integrated into the video, while I took charge of filming and editing all other graphic elements.
To achieve the dunking effect, we had Grizz leap from a small trampoline, generously provided by Jenae. However, a minor challenge arose due to Grizz’s oversized feet. Despite the initial shot turning out well, I decided to incorporate different shots during the editing process to effectively convey the story and enhance the dunking effect. I though for sure the trampoline would of helped the jumping effect, but it turned out we had to show his feet, and come up with a different plan. Some improvisation was necessary to make it appear as though Grizz possessed impressive jumping abilities. I appreciate Grizz’s willingness to climb a ladder and collaborate on this aspect—thank you, Grizz!
